[. . . ] X11-35580 Safety Warning About Photosensitive Seizures A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these 'photosensitive epileptic seizures' while watching video games. These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects. [. . . ] An Explorer can construct Trading Posts on Trade Routes to boost your economy. Your Explorer can be hit and wounded but never dies. Finding & Gathering Resources As your villagers and Explorers explore the landscape, you'll discover sources of Food (such as sheep, deer, and fish), Wood (trees), and Coin (mines). Stockpiled resources of Food, Wood, and Coin help you pay for improvements that make your civilization more powerful. Immortal Click the Find Explorer icon on the Mini Map to locate your Explorer. Use your Explorer to reveal the uncharted areas of your map and seek out: Treasure. By keeping your Explorer and military units together and forming Explorer parties, they can back each other up when taking out a Treasure guardian or taking on an enemy scouting party. Tracking Your Current Resources The Resource panel, at the lower-left of your screen, monitors the real-time values and levels of your Food, Wood, and Coin stockpiles. It also tracks your village's real-time population against its population limit. 68 69 Determining Where to Place Your Town Center Your first Town Center is placed automatically at a site that's near resources. Nomad mode--the exception to this--requires players to choose all their Town Center sites. When placing your Town Center, use your Explorer and soldiers, also called an Explorer party, to search out the most strategic location. There are several factors to consider when choosing a site for your Town Center: Are resources readily accessible?Look for access to animals and fishing for Food, timber for Wood, and mines for Coin. Click your Covered Wagon, which contains all the raw materials needed to set up your Town Center. Place your pointer on the site for your Town Center, and then right-click the location. A Covered Wagon will travel to your site, build your Town Center, unload your villagers and resources, and then disappear. The villagers will immediately stockpile your Food, Wood, and Coin resources. Exploring a Map When you land in a new territory, most of the map is hidden. Your civilian units (villagers, soldiers, and Explorers) must venture into the unknown territory to reveal what's hidden beneath the map's blacked-out areas. Designed for exploring and Treasure gathering, Explorers excel at uncovering resources and discovering enemies. By using your Explorer in this way, you can expand your civilization and gain power. But beware--Explorers are vulnerable to your territory's hidden dangers. To explore hidden areas of the map using your Explorer Select your Explorer or an Explorer party, and then right-click the area to explore on your map or Mini Map. 70 71 Fog of War Whenever your Explorer party departs an area, a semitransparent fog--the Fog of War--creeps in, obscuring everything in its path. For example, if your party discovers an enemy building, the Fog of War descends over the building as you depart to conceal all real-time activity at the site. When your unit returns, the fog lifts and you may find all sorts of changes to the site--the building could be more heavily fortified or even destroyed. Gathering Treasure While scouting territory, your Explorer can gather Treasure to increase your stockpiles of Food, Wood, and Coin. [. . . ] The Manchurians formed the Qing dynasty, which replaced the Ming dynasty in the 1600s. Ronin A masterless samurai who has no lord and often wanders or works for the highest bidder. Stradiot An aggressive light cavalry unit originally from Albania. They favor a spear with a point at both ends. Swiss Pikeman An elite mercenary armed with a pike. In an age of gunpowder, the Swiss Pikemen recalled the era of the Greek phalanx. Privateer A mercenary warship for combat and transport. They are manned by pirates who work for a particular government and are authorized to pirate the fleets of enemy nations. 130 ENSEMBLE STUDIOS PROGRAMMING Dave 'Bigdog' Pottinger - Lead Programmer John Evanson - Asst. peter HG Alumnus | posted 10-07-07 01:23 PM ET (US) 1 / 12 It isn't. I think that image is from one of the movies for Greece. The table of contents is off as well; the original booklet has only 32 pages and stops just before chapter 6 in your TOC - but the technology tree was on a separate and beautiful fold-out. The other information was probably taken from the on-line help and the files on the CD-ROM in the docs folder. |

posted 10-07-07 01:26 PM ET (US) 2 / 12 Naw this has too many awesome sketches to be just grabbed and put together.. send me an email @ [email protected] and I will get it over to you asap. The date on it is 12/97, I am guessing they missed sending this off.. or scracthed it to start workin on the ROR one, it has the a similar layout. Definetly looks good to me. Edit: Sorry don't have all the facts straight yet, the water marks on each page show DIFFERENT dates 12/11/97, 3:40 PM, 12/11/98, 1:17 PM, etc.. the latest on is 1/30/99, 2:54 AM Which does correspond to the PDF actual creation date. Keep in mind the ROR PDF shows one of Dec 98. [This message has been edited by Don Jorge deLeon (edited 10-07-2007 @ 01:42 PM).] |
peter HG Alumnus | posted 10-07-07 03:03 PM ET (US) 3 / 12 I didn't say it was grabbed and put together in a haphazard way, I said they had added a lot of stuff, some of it already in other files. The booklet doesn't have separate chapter pages with an illustration for instance. Some of the content has been moved around, many of the drawings in the booklet have been replaced by others. You can bet they had plenty to choose from. And in the booklet the margins are blank - the ragged grayish borders are there, but they don't have the history texts found in the pdf. I do believe that the help files have information about the civilizations and I'm very sure that the tech trees for each civ were in separate doc files on the CD. |
posted 10-07-07 03:06 PM ET (US) 4 / 12 so, what is the probablity you think that ES or MS did this? Also should I upload this here? I think it looks awesome, considering I have not seen some of those sketches and I have been lookin in a lot of sites for aoebeta.com site. I just wished it was in color, grayscales is a negative imo. |
peter HG Alumnus | posted 10-07-07 03:18 PM ET (US) 5 / 12 That seems to be pretty conclusive. It's basically the old booklet with much information added. I just saw that it's shipped with the collector's edition Uploading it here - better discuss that with Lorenzo first. I don't see any objection but you never know. |
posted 10-07-07 03:57 PM ET (US) 6 / 12 hmm. MS has the ROR one up for download here btw download.microsoft.com/download/b/1/8/b180af00-6eae-490e-88d6-71ec4f4af01a/AOE_ Rise_of_Rome_Manual_EN.pdf Anyway, right, if Doc or another mod could let me know, thanks. It is not something that would ship out in CD it has printer marks on the edges. |
peter HG Alumnus | posted 10-07-07 04:02 PM ET (US) 7 / 12 The printer marks are on the AOE manual pdf on the Collector's edition DVD, but not on the ROR manual, which was unchanged. |
posted 10-07-07 04:07 PM ET (US) 8 / 12 so they left the printer marks on the manual, in the DVD? lol, does not sound like the polished MS we all know and er.. ______. |
peter HG Alumnus | posted 10-07-07 04:39 PM ET (US) 9 / 12 One of MS's many oversights. You seem to have forgotten the many bugs in AoE - and the bugs introduced in the patches. |
posted 10-08-07 09:16 AM ET (US) 10 / 12 I think uploading it should be okay - I can't really see a copyright infringement as a lot of copies of the game aren't even shipped with the manual anymore. Even if this is a bit dodgy its better than nothing.
